At Contra Costa Medical Career College, our Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is designed to prepare students to enter this fast-growing sector of the healthcare industry. Also known as Ultrasound Technicians, Diagnostic Medical Sonographers are trained medical professionals who use special equipment to direct high frequency sound waves into a patient’s body.

Using sophisticated equipment, Ultrasound Technicians produce images of internal organs, soft tissue, and blood vessels, as well as observe developing fetuses in the womb. In this 72-week program, students learn to use specialized equipment and are prepared for immediate entry-level positions in the field through a combination of coursework and clinical labs. Students also receive real-world on-the-job experience through a Clinical Experience.


Program Admissions Requirements:

  • Associate degree or higher in any discipline.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (all transcripts included).
  • Prerequisite courses (completed within 10 years, grade C or higher, 2.5 GPA minimum, 3 semester/4 quarter credits each):
    • Anatomy & Physiology (with lab)
    • Medical Terminology
    • Oral Communication (i.e. speech)
    • Written Communication
    • College Algebra or higher

Students in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program learn how to:

  • Verify patient history and health status
  • Operate ultrasound equipment, record and analyze findings in real time during the exam, and communicate findings with interpreting and referring physicians
  • Select and capture the best images, take measurements and make calculations
  • Evaluate tests and images relating to a patient’s condition
  • Communicate with patients and physicians as needed
  • Consult with medical professionals on patient results

 Contra Costa Medical Career College’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is offered in a hybrid-online format. Students learn classroom theory online while completing hands-on training in on-campus labs. All students also gain valuable experience through an externship.

Many of Contra Costa Medical Career College’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography graduates go to work in hospitals, clinics, diagnostic imaging centers, doctors’ offices, and specialized medical facilities, performing ultrasound scans to assist in diagnosing and monitoring patients’ health conditions.

Our hands-on training prepares you for the tasks employers are hiring for, so you can step confidently into your healthcare career. To enroll, applicants must hold an Associate degree or higher in any discipline, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, and a Wonderlic SLE exam score of 18 or higher. Official transcripts are required as proof of education. In addition, students must have successfully completed specific prerequisite courses within the past 10 years, earning at least a grade of “C” and maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.5 in these courses. The required prerequisites include Anatomy & Physiology with lab, Medical Terminology, Oral Communication, Written Communication, and College Algebra or a higher-level math course.
